Q&A with a 6-year-old Co-sleeper
The Family Bedroom
Written by Irina Gallagher
Q: How do you like sharing a room?
A: Good. I like it.
Q: What are the benefits for you for in sharing a room with the family?
A: What’s a benefit? … Oh, okay. I have had zero bad dreams in the room now that we are all together. In the old room, there was almost one bad dream per night. Now I don’t have bad dreams. And I like waking up in the morning when it’s 2% light outside and asking, “Papa, what time is it?” so I can see if it’s okay to get up yet. I like knowing when I’m first to wake up. I love being with my parents the whole night and not having to run across the house to tell you that I’m scared.
Q: Is there anything you don’t like about sharing a bedroom?
A: No.
Q: Did you always feel like you could come to our room after a bad dream?
A: No.
Q: Why? Was it easy to come to us during the night?
A: No. I was alone. That’s why all this happened. Because I was alone. Now it seems like I’ll never have another bad dream in our room.
Q: Do you feel like you lost your private space?
A: I feel better about it actually.
Q: How do you feel about what was your old bedroom becoming a family space?
A: I like it. I like that we can all work in there together.
Q: How do you feel about sleeping in a separate bed next to us, not with us?
A: I feel better that I have my own space, because, I had no space in bed with you guys.
Q: Overall, how do you feel about the shared bedroom?
A: Wonderful.
Q: Would you recommend this sleeping arrangement to other families?
A: Yes, I think it’s the best way.

I wonder how many parents would ask their children sincerely about sleeping arrangements without their own already built up standard opinions. Very good.
